Pretty much everyone has played Adventure Island, but I don't know of anyone who beat it. This is a side-scrolling action game. You are Master Higgins, and your girlfriend is kidnapped by the evil Witch Doctor. To get her back, you must travel through 8 worlds with 4 levels in each. At each 4 level, you will battle with a big boss. Higgins can pick up axes or fire as weapons, but to stay alive, he must eat fruit which appears on the screen. Adventure Island is a good, challenging, fun game, but you'll lose plenty of sleep before finishing this epic.
