Battle Chess

The intial concept for Battle Chess sounds great; take basic chess, but have the characters have animated moves and fight in mortal combat. Unfortunately, good idea, bad execution. First of all, the graphics just arenm't that good; they're blurry, and the animated sequences really drag. It's like you're watching a movie in slow-motion. The battle sequences are fixed, too. Unlike Archon, whoever makes the aggressive move into an enemy's square automatically wins like traditional chess, but with the title of Battle Chess you'd think you could actually battle. Sadly, the scripts are fixed like professial wrestling. On the plus however, each character has a different animation for fighting each other character, and the sound effects and voices are totally awesome; however, there's only a one-player mode so it'll take you a lot of playing to see every animation. Still, you have the options of takeback/replay akin to Chessmaster, but yet, the game misses its mark. Too bad.
