Blades of Steel
This is one of the few games that I really love. This game and I go back a long time. It was the third NES game I got; my dad gave it to me for my birthday. I had no idea what Ice Hockey was back then; I think my dad was trying to get me into sports. I didn't, but I love this game, I used to play it with him every time I could. I still have it to this day, nine years later...
Oh, sorry. ON WITH THE REVIEW!!!
The plot: You are an ice hockey team who wants to win the Stanley Cup. To do so, you must enter the tournament and beat three teams. (real NHL teams, as of 1988. It's cool to see their uniforms back then :-) But, to win the Stanley Cup, you must be good, so the game has an exhibition mode for you to fine-tune your skills.
In addition to the normal hockey rules and skills, you can gain control of the puck by hitting a player a few times. Occasionally, they fall down, and you can retrieve the puck, but most of the time, you must fist-fight them for it. (OK, that's not in normal hockey, but it makes the game cool.) Also, in addition to all the cool hockey stuff, in the middle of the second period break, you get to play Gradius!!!
I recommend: You must have this game, money is just an object!
The Verdict: The best KICK-ASS Ice Hockey game in existance!!!
Graphics B- (nothing special, but good detail)
Sound/Music A (little but good music, but the voices, moans, and grunts are fantasic!)
Challenge A (if you can win the cup on Pro level {without cheating}, you have way too much eye-hand coordination for one person.)
Play Control A- (The only problem is control a goalie and a player at the same time, but this 2D game has better cotrol than any 3D hockey game out there.)
Fun Factor A+
Replay Value A+
Overall A+
